In the last couple of years there has been some controversy surrounding the use of a neck collar for pets. And rightly so, they can be dangerous when your dogs get stuck. This is why dog harnesses are such a good invention. They prevent your dog from getting hurt when they get tangled in a leash because its design does not go over the neck but wraps around the torso instead. This way the force gets put on the sturdy ribcage and spine and not the fragile neck.
What to consider when buying a harness
You might have guessed it already, but buying the right sized harness for your dog is a very surefire way to get the most comfortable experience. Because the harnesses are quite tightly fitted (it needs to be to distribute force evenly) you need to make sure the one you buy is neither too large nor too small. That said, the fact that these types of collars are safer than the simple ones does not mean you can leave it on 24/7. So remember to take it off every time you and your friend have returned from a walk. This is even more important when the harness is wet or dirty, as it can cause skin irritation. This is because the fabric (nylon is the most common) might retain moisture and bacteria more easily. In other words, these collars might need to be cleaned a little bit more than a leather neck collar, but you can just clean them in the washer in most cases.
Harnesses decrease the chance of a dog escaping its leash
Because harnesses are both tighter and wrapped more securely around your dog, your friend has a smaller chance of making a run for it. So, if your dog has been proven to be a flight risk or is just a little too active, you might want to consider buying it a harness. The multiple straps in most designs make it so that they all have to be loosened to remove it.
Are there any serious downsides?
At this point you might ask yourself if there are any downsides or dangers to the design of a harness? Well, the answer is yes and no. The dangers of a dog harness mostly come from prolonged wear, especially if it is dirty or wet. If you just take it off of your dog after a walk (just leave it connected to the lease for easy use) then there won’t be any dangers. In short: a harness is safe and easy and might just be the best way to walk with your dog.
